2019 Symposium
Training Course of
"Application of Digital Technology in Stomatology"

The department of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Peking University School of Stomatology had held six times of digital technology symposium and training course in Beijing City, Jiangsu Province, Tianjin City, Shanxi Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region around China. The symposium systematically introduced the recent research progress and clinical application of digital technology in stomatology, aiming to promote its use in China.

During August 23 to 24, 2019, the seventh symposium of “Application of Digital technology in Oral Medicine” was held in the city of Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, China. More than one hundred trainees from several provinces and cities took an active part in this study session. The President of the Conference, Professor Chuanbin Guo, and the Dean of Hebei Medical University of Stomatology, Professor Jinchang Xing, delivered the welcome speech on the opening ceremony respectively, which gave a positive evaluation for this study session. This academic activity actively promoted the digital technology of stomatology in the region.
Compared to the previous sessions, the content of lectures was further expanded and the concepts and experience of digital technology application related to stomatology were shared by the experts this time. 19 senior experts from home and abroad in the field of stomatology and related disciplines were invited to give an in-depth explanation on digital technology, covering computer science, robotics, advanced manufacturing, the application of computer aided design, surgical navigation, rapid prototyping and other digital technology in oral medicine.

Peking University Medicine Forum for Reconstruction of Temporomandibular Joint (2019) was held as part of the study session. Two internationally renowned experts were invited to give lectures, who are Professor Nabil Samman, the chief editor of "International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery", and Professor Peter x. Ma from University of Michigan, bringing international cutting-edge technology concept for the audiences.
Nowadays, we are facing the digital age. Digital technology is becoming more and more popular in the field of medicine, and various digital diagnosis and treatment methods are emerging in large numbers. Under the leadership of Professor Chuanbin Guo, the digital technology symposium have injected sustained momentum for the development of digital technology of stomatology in north and central China over the years and improved the diagnosis and treatment in stomatology. 2016 Symposium
Training Course of
"The Application of Advanced Digital Techniques in Maxillofacial-Craniofacial Surgery"

The fourth training course of “Application of Digital Technique in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” was held in Tianjin, China from July16 to 17, 2016. The course was co-hosted by the Peking University School of Stomatology (PKUSS) and Tianjin Stomatological Hospital. There were 79 participants from 8 provinces of China attending the course.
Sixteen experts gave lectures in the course, including 13 professors and doctors from Peking University School of Stomatology and 3 invited speakers from Tianjin Stomatological Hospital. The topics of the course included: 1)Application of Advanced Digital Techniques in the Research of Salivary Glands, from Prof. Guangyan Yu. 2)the Navigation-Guided Surgery for Skull Base Tumor Surgery, from Professor Chuanbin Guo; 2)3D printing and tissue engineering from Professor Peijun LV; 3) Virtual Planning of Orthodontic and Orthognathic Surgical Therapy, from Prof. Zili Li; 4)3D Printing of Personalized Implants, from Prof. Zhihui Tang; 5) Digital Operation Room: Present and Future, from Dr. Xiaojing Liu; 6)Application of Advanced Digital Techniques in Dental Implantation, from Dr. JianXu.
The workshop session was carried out with the same training software and equipment as last year training course held in Xuzhou, China. Thirty surgeons were instructed on how to use our own developed software to design orthognathic surgery and fibula flap reconstruction surgery. The software was developed under cooperation between Peking University and Byte king Technology. The techniques of Navigation-Guided Surgery including design before surgery and consideration during surgery were shown to the audience as well.
The aim of this training course is to help more doctors to know the newly advanced digital techniques in oral and maxillofacial surgery and give patients better treatment. We will introduce more digital techniques in future training courses and hold the courses in other cities of China to let more doctors know and learn the new technique and knowledge.
The next training course will be held in Inner Mongolias Autonomous Region, China, 2017.
2015 Symposium
Training Course of
"Digital Technique Application in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery"

The third training course of “Application of Digital Techniquein Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” was held in Xu Zhou, China from June 27 to 28, 2015. The course was co-hosted by the Peking University School of Stomatology (PKUSS) and Xu Zhou Stomatological Hospital. There were nearly 60 participants, mainly from the nearby local hospitals, attending the course. The course was strongly supported by the local government.
There were 18 experts giving lectures in the course, including 15 professors and doctors from Peking University and 3 invited speakers from Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University and Nanjing Stomatological Hospital. They are all very active in applying the digital techniques in clinical work, and have good experiences in this field.

Advanced technologies attract doctors from different majors of stomatology come closer. In this course, the lectures were not just limited in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, some of them involved the prosthodontic and orthodontic treatments. Besides classic lectures and step by step instruction on digital techniques in trauma, reconstruction, orthognathic treatment, there were many new topics, including: 1)clinical application and researches of digital surgical techniques in oral and maxillofacial surgery: state of the art, from Professor CB Guo; 2)3D printing and tissue engineering from Professor Peijun LV; 3)Digital Workshop in hospital, from Prof. Xudong Wang. 4) Digital healthcare service:an intersection between doctors and technicians, from Dr Xiao-jing Liu.

In the workshop session, 20 surgeons were instructed on how to use our newly developed software to design orthognathic surgery and fibula flap reconstruction surgery. This new software was developed under cooperation between Peking University and Byte king Technology, based on the research achievements on digital workflow in department of OMS, Peking University. This is the first formal release of the software. In the near future, Digital Surgical Laboratory of PKUSS will construct a platform for digital surgical design to enable doctors from other hospitals in China to use the techniques.

This was the first time for us to hold the training course in other city of China and it turned out very successful. Since we held this kind of training courses and many digital techniques related symposiums these years, most importantly, the 5th international conference of ADT Foundation held in Beijing in 2014, more and more doctors are aware of the advantages of the technique and eager to learn the technologies, workflows and skills. Professor CB Guo says: “we should hold the training course and different types of meeting in other cities, not only just the big city like Beijing or Shanghai, to let more doctors know and like the new techniques and give patients better treatment.

The next training course will be held in Tianjin, China, 2016.

2011 Symposium
Symposium of
“The Application of Advanced Digital Techniques in Maxillofacial-Craniofacial Surgery”

The symposium of “The application of advanced digital techniques in maxillofacial-craniofacial surgery” was held on December 3, 2o11, Beijing. The symposium was hosted by Peking University school and hospital of Stomatology, and was funded by National High-tech R&D (863) Program of Chinese government. 133 audiences from 12 hospitals all over china attended the symposia. 47 participators joined the workshops focused on the usage computer navigation system and surgical virtual system. The audience were mostly surgeons majoring in maxillofacial surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery and ophthalmology. There were also computer engineers and robotic developers joining the symposium.

Professor Chuan-bin Guo, the leader of 863 program, gave an outline speech on the independent research and development of medical assisted robotic system in maxillofacial-craniofacial surgery. Six professors from three famous hospitals of stomatology in China shared their experiences in the application of digital techniques in maxillofacial-craniofacial surgery. Their application including craniofacial reconstruction, maxillofacial trauma, skull base tumor resection and orthognathic surgery.

Digital technique is one of the most important innovations in maxillofacial-craniofacial surgery. More and more doctors use virtual surgery, custom made implants and navigation systems in their clinical work. This symposium was welcomed by all the audience and it opens a door for people who are interested in this area to get more information of digital techniques, share their experiences and enjoy their career.
